1756
The Origins
It all began in 1756, when Philippe Stephan, a wealthy industrialist from Mulhouse, founded the first weaving and printing manufacture. This marked the beginning of a textile adventure that would span centuries.
1839
The Era of Andrinople Red
In 1839, Charles-Emile Steiner took over the dye works and introduced the famous Andrinople red, imported from England. This distinctive shade marked the beginning of the Manufacture’s renown.
1843
Block Printing
In 1843, the Manufacture perfected block printing: each motif, hand-carved on wooden blocks, was applied color after color. This artisanal process gave the fabrics exceptional brilliance and refinement, making each piece truly unique.
1900
International Recognition
At the Paris World’s Fair, a Japanese panel composed of 36 colors and 840 blocks won first prize, placing Alsace in direct competition with Japan. The Manufacture established an international reputation thanks to its exceptional craftsmanship.
1960
Flat Screen Printing (Lyon Technique)
With the industrial transformation of textile printing, the flat screen printing technique developed. MIE then expanded into table and home linen printing, opening a new chapter in its activity.
1980 - 1989
A New Beginning
Mr. Borin took over the company with the support of the team and revitalized it under the name Manufacture d’Impression sur Étoffes. Jean-Michel Borin joined the company and launched the Beauvillé brand, initiating diversification into table linen.
2009
State Recognition
The Manufacture was awarded the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” label, the only national distinction recognizing exceptional craftsmanship
